Paphiopedilum Berenice
(lowii x philippinense)

 Home
Paphiopedilum Berenice is a lovely, multi-floral type Paphiopedilum hybrid, first registered in 1891. The plant makes stiff, upright, strap-leaved growths, which produce tall, 16 to 24 inch, 3 to 6 flowered inflorescences. Paphiopedilum philippinense as a parent gives the hybrid the nice, long, 6 to 8 inch petals, while Paphiopedilum lowii colors the petals a beautiful reddish purple.

Second-year blooming of a plant with three flowers and two buds yet to open, during February 2003. This plant had Paph. philippinense variety roebelinii as a parent, giving it nice 7-inch petals.

A second plant, this one is blooming for the first time at approximately four years old, and produced only three flowers this time, but it has richer coloration in the pouch and the dorsal sepal. This plant is also blooming during February 2003.

Culture: Light - bright indirect light approximately 2000 to 3000 footcandles; temperature - intermediate to warm, night temps down to 60F during the winter, summer day temps up to 85F; humidity - 60 to 90%; watering - keep moist, but not wet, at all times; fertilizer - routine light feeding with a balanced ratio (20-20-20) fertilizer. Paphiopedilums benefit from very good air movement at all times, but make sure the air is humid and intermediate in temperatures, to prevent stress and desication. Paphiopedilum Berenice prefers an "acid" potting mix, and plants should be kept in relatively small pots to restrict the roots somewhat, and prevent root rot problems.
